Muscle Phone

Muscle Phone
Muscle Phone is a new Area Orion Tumblr blog featuring self-shots of fit and muscular women. Earlier this year I posted Mirror Mirror and planned to make it a regular blog segment. I started looking for more images and noticed there were MASS amounts of mirror pics from female bodybuilders, fitness models and average women getting fit. A post every couple weeks wouldn’t do this voyeuristic phenomenon justice.

Muscle Phone launched in early March with 15-20 images posted daily. Those numbers quickly increased as did it’s popularity. As of this posting, nearly 3,000 images have been added and over 3,200 followers - more than any other AO related site. Where Area Orion is mainly big fantasy female muscle, Muscle Phone is simply real women taking low-fi, unaltered cell phone pics of themselves. One fan wrote “Thank you for this blog! I'm so addicted to it because most of those women aren't photoshopped. So you see reality and that's something you can train for. :)” If they only knew.

Check out the never-ending scroll of sexy, non-photoshopped, fit and muscular women at Muscle Phone. There's always plenty of the other variety at Area Orion.

Strong Women in History: Charmion

Charmion
The Human Marvels - Laverie Vallee (July 18, 1875 – February 6, 1949), best known by her stage name Charmion, was a Sacramento born trapeze artist who possessed strength and a physique most men would be envious of. However, she was most well known for her risqué striptease performances.

The act opened with Charmion taking the stage in full Victorian attire. She would then mount the trapeze and proceed to undress to her leotard while performing impressive and strength-dependant stunts. The act was incredibly impressive and provocative for the era. However, the controversy created by her performances did not prevent the formulation of a devoted, and mostly male, fan base.

One of her greatest fans was Thomas Edison. As a result of that adoration, on November 11, 1901 Charmion committed a simplified version of her act to film for Edison. The film, simply entitled ‘Trapeze Disrobing Act’ focused more on the erotic aspect of the performance, though a few remarkable feats of strength are featured.

Charmion eventually retired to Santa Ana, California. She passed away on February 6, 1949 at the age of 73.

Maria Calo Spotlight

Female bodybuilder
I was born in Argentina and am a professional bodybuilder since 1994, although I have not had many opportunities to compete. I’ve established myself in the USA in 1999. I competed in different sports before I started bodybuilding (including Fencing, Track and Field events). I like to work out heavy but my priority is to improve muscle details. I enjoy Art and music very much, specially classical, Dalli and Picasso are my favorite artists. I love to know and learn about other Cultures, I think that everyone in every nation has something in common. I have extensive background in different fields including: Exercise Physiology, Sports Science and Aerobics and Fitness Professor/Instructor.

I have excellent genetics to built muscle, and I put in quality time and dedication at the GYM. I love to be strong, big and feminine. I don’t really care when people say we can’t be feminine. Femininity comes from manners and education, and most of those unkind people do not know those words. I consider myself smart, sensitive and I love to have sense of humor.

The Female Muscle Folk Art of Lewis Smith

Female Muscle Folk ArtLewis Smith was an eccentric and untrained artist who is now internationally recognized for his folk art of muscular women. He was born in 1907 but didn't begin drawing until he was in his 60's. After the death of his mother, he lived alone in the woods of Ohio without electricity or telephone.

Smith uses familiar scenery of bars, diners and neighborhoods from train trips his mother had taken him on. He typically drew with crayon on canvases of paper grocery bags, cardboard and even the walls of his house and buildings. Common "throwaway" items like old boxes, magazines and bottles spoke to him about the outside world. While mostly secluded, Smith read and subscribed to over 100 newspapers, giving him a unique worldview which he expressed in his art and writings.

His work was included in a museum show on art brut in France in 2000, and in the book "ABCD une collection d'art brut". Lewis Smith passed away in 1998.
