Strong Women: The Braselly Sisters

The Braselly Sisters
The Braselly Sisters
The Braselly Sisters were a pair of strongwomen who specialized in graceful and artistic strength stunts. They were also sisters of the even more famous female athlete, Sandwina. Here the two ladies do an adagio (acrobatic balancing) act. The photo found its way into The Police Gazette in 1909 where it was titled 'Muscles and Music.' The editors asked rhetorically, 'But don't you think the lady athletes are a stunning pair of statuesque beauties?'

Artist Spotlight on Digital Amazons

Digital Amazons
Enter the world of Digital-Amazons, a 3D female muscle studio “blazing a trail of handmade hardbodied heroine entertainment”. London based creator/owner Joel creates images, comics and animations depicting amazons, female bodybuilders and women with fantastic muscular bodies and spirit. He describes it as “Muscle-Funk” or “female muscle with a lotta cool”.

Digital AmazonsJoel was born into the world of art and studied Fine Art and Design in London. He says he didn’t learn much there. “I started teaching myself about Macs and Photoshop in the 2nd year” he adds and became attracted to the 3D medium from arcade games, like “Killer Instinct” and leading 3D artists, like Japanese innovator “Iceman”.

Joel is inspired by many things besides 3D art. The performing arts, romance, being under the stars and the muscular female physique. He combined his love of 3D and female muscle to create Digital-Amazons. His aim was to capture the mystique, beauty and eroticism of the women while creating something fresh and new. Not beholden to one specific program, he uses various software to help him achieve the best final result. 3D may not be considered a high art form yet, but Joel tackles it with the voracity and dedication of a true artist. He researches, designs and creates everything himself from the ground up, making it entirely his own. He imbues his work with emotional and sexual energy in what he calls a “long and draining creative process that’s like a hellfire of creation”. There’s an intense amount of love, design and R&D that goes into each character.

Joel says he’s been fortunate to make money with Digital-Amazons but hopes to one day have his work exhibited and published. He looks to expand into photography, video and illustration work and one day become a serious creative force in the bodybuilding community. “I’ve been privileged to know wonderful people, fans and producers in the bodybuilding world.”

Although Joel has taken some criticism from the animation industry and even family, he is extremely grateful to the friends, artists and those in the physique biz that have supported him. “I did what I did with DA because I believed it from the bottom of my heart and I have loved what I do.” See more of Joel’s work at Digital-Amazons.com or contact him at ja@digital-amazons.com.

Girls lifting weights

Denise Milani
We’ve all seen these fitness memes around so I decided to make my own. Denise Milani is the perfect example of what happens to hot women who workout... they get even hotter. Throw in an Area Orion morph to illustrate the point - although would love for Denise to pack on more beef :)

Monique Jones Spotlight

Monique Jones
I’ve been in the fitness industry since 2001, where i competed in my first fiqure competition. Alot of people didn’t know that about me only seeing me in the bodybuilding scene. I competed in fiqure for five years, moving on to female bodybuilding in 2007.

Monique Jones
My first show then was in 2008, at the state show, winning my class and the overall. That same year i went to the Junior USA’s placing 2nd and the Nationals placing 3rd. I continued in 2009 at the North Americans placing 3rd and and later that year 3rd at the Nationals. Going back and forth in my placing i then knew it was time to focus even harder on my training.

I trained harder and in 2010 went on to the North Americans again winning my class and over all, which earned me my Pro Card. I couldn’t of been any happier! Knowing that i had crossed that hurdle and was ready to go on to the Pro stage was the greatest feeling ever! Next was my Pro debut, which was in Tampa placing 5th. I was pleased with that being my first Pro show but wanted to do another one to at least qualify for the Olympia. So i prepared for the show in Hartford, placing 2nd! Well that did it, that qualified me for the O! Even more excited to be on stage my first year as a Pro, i placed 9th there.

I couldn’t of asked for a better year! With God, my family, my sponsor Species Nutrtion, friends and fans its been a wonderful journey! Thanks you guys for all of your support it means alot!

Among the earliest strongwomen is Elise Serafin Luftmann. Apparently from a German-speaking region of Bohemia, she performed all over central Europe. Luftmann was famous for her ability to lift heavy weights and to juggle cannonballs. This illustration dates c. 1830.

Artist Spotlight on Adam Hughes

Comic book superheroines
Adam Hughes is a comic book artist known for his gorgeous, stylized covers of strong, elegantly drawn super heroines and fantasy figures. He is considered to be one of a new generation of "Good Girl" artists inspired by classic pin-up artists Petty, Vargas and Elvgren. He pencils, inks and colors his own covers, using both traditional and digital mediums in what he calls a "naturalistic" style.

Hughes was born 1967 in Riverside, New Jersey and began drawing "as soon as the opposable thumb started working." He broke into the comics world in 1985 and hit the mainstream in 1989 on D.C. Comic's Justice League. In the beginning, he drew both covers and interior pages, but later switched to just cover art. While working on the Dark Horse series "Ghost", Hughes started using an "Art Nouveau" style to give his art a Film Noir feel. He also started using Photoshop to digitally color his work.

In 1998, Hughes began a successful 5 year run of Wonder Woman covers that brought him critical acclaim. He followed that up with another successful run on Catwoman. Besides comic covers, his artwork can be seen in many places outside the comic book industry. He recently created the cover for a new Wonder Woman Encyclopedia and has an "Art of..." coffee table book in the works.

Adam Hughes currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Visit the official Adam Hughes website or his DeviantArt page for more.
