Big Muscle Wins at Europa

Anne Freitas won the women’s bodybuilding championship at the IFBB Europa Battle of Champions this weekend in Hartford, CT. Anne is a former Body Fitness competitor from Brazil, now grabbing a spot at the Olympia in her Pro debut. She’s been creating buzz around the net with her unbelievable size & conditioning and its great to see that hard work rewarded by the IFBB.

The competition was fierce with Michelle Cummings, Monique Jones and Tazzie Colomb following very close behind - all top women in the sport. Also of note, Amber DeFrancesco made her Pro Debut at the Europa

Congratulations to everyone and we hope to see more big muscle rewarded in the future.

Power Girl

DC Comic's Power Girl is a buff, busty and blonde superhero popular with female muscle fans. Born Kara Zor-L on the planet Krypton, she first appeared in All Star Comics #58 in 1976. Kara is the Kryptonian cousin to the Golden Age Superman and possesses the same strengths and abilities. She is essentially Supergirl of an alternate Universe, just more... developed.

On Earth-Two, Clark Kent and his wife Lois adopted Kara after she landed on Earth to help her adjust to life. She soon began her superhero career, but sought to distance herself from Superman's identity. She took the name Power Girl and created her own distinctive costume, replacing the iconic "S" with a hole. Kara created the secret identity of computer programmer Karen Starr to help her adapt to life on Earth. She became a member of various superhero teams and started her own software company StarrWare, Inc.

In 1985, DC Comics wanted to clean up Superman's long convoluted history with the series Crisis on Infinite Earth's. Superman once again became the sole survivor of Krypton and Power Girl's history had to change. Earth-Two was gone and Kara was told she was actually the infant granddaughter of a mage from ancient Atlantis. Thankfully, DC's 2005 series Infinite Crisis restored her status as a survivor from Krypton, became a member of the Justice Society of America and appeared in her own series.

Confused yet? With DC’s new 52 relaunch, Kara was reintroduced as the Earth-2 Supergirl and eventually adopted the identity of Power Girl. You could literally hear fanboys cry as she donned a new full body onesi which covered the gaping chest hole.

Colette Guimond Spotlight

After my first year of training I did my first show in 1988 and was immediately addicted even after taking only 4th place. I was small, only 110lbs. Next year I won the Montreal '89 Championship at 114lbs..

I kept improving until 1995, and won many other shows. I was on my way to finally to make my ultimate dream a reality, competing in the Miss O. But an accident stopped me from competing. in the 1997, it could have been Fatal.

Doctors could not believe how fast I was recuperating and that I actually survived. After nine (9) surgeries I am bigger and harder than ever.

I was told that I had amazing potential in competition I chose not to compete because i did not want to deal missing muscles on my left shoulder due to the surgery. I felt that would prevent me for winning. For me it was a great loss that was difficult to accept.

But in 2005 I was on stage again and did manage to get my pro card! I'm Glad because I've beat the odds! "never give up " There always be something great for you waiting there ! I won the heavyweight class at the Canadians.

Tarna Alderman Transformation

Bodybuilder Tarna Alderman has come a long way in a short time. After her pregnancy she ballooned to 236 lbs and in 2006 decided to change. She was ready for her first bodybuilding competition by 2009.

She has packed on serious muscle and currently on her journey for a coveted Pro Card.

Artist Spotlight on Boris Vallejo

Boris Vallejo's artwork has been synonymous with fantasy and muscle for nearly four decades. His oil paintings are erotic, romantic and typically set in a mythological landscape. He pushes the limits of the muscular form with his beautiful maidens, heroines and amazons alongside beasts & warriors. "I have always had a special love for the perfect structure of the human body" he says "and fantasy art enabled me to depict muscular and sensuous bodies in all variations in my works."

Born 1941 in Lima, Peru, he first started painting at age 13. Vallejo immigrated to the United States in 1964 to pursue a career in art. His first illustrating job was at the age of 16. Early paperback work for Tarzan, Conan and Doc Savage gave him a fan following and quickly led to commissions for movie posters, advertisements, album covers and collectibles.

Vallejo has become a modern master and icon of the fantasy genre. His composition and color shows influence from centuries of paintings and pays homage to the great masters. He is also inspired by contemporaries in the fantasy genre and keeps an eye out for new artists. He has modeled for some of his own male figures, and many of his later female characters were modeled by his wife Julie Bell, a fellow artist & former bodybuilder.

Vallejo's art still graces the covers of science fiction novels and he showcases his work in annual calendars. He often collaborates with wife Julie under the name "Boris and Julie" or "Julie and Boris". Check out more of his and Julie's work at www.imaginistix.com.
