Is Lady OM MMXI the next stage of female bodybuilding?

There's no doubt that the current competitive FBB scene seems broken with a questionable future. Could a new online competition by Italian photographer Oberdan Mancini be the solution?

I recently discovered the competition Lady OM MMXI (which I guess means Lady Oberdan Mancini 2011) from FemaleCityFlex. It states "LADY OM MMXI is not simply a contest. It's an exciting show that wants to share with the world the love for bodybuilding."

Here's the run-down. Female bodybuilding athletes from around the world compete in the first bodybuilding contest created specifically for the web. Online viewers can judge and express opinions. It consists of twelve athletes from different nations representing 5 continents by invitation only. Classes are divided, six in fitness and six in bodybuilding. There are no weight or height parameters, just the best contest shape in aesthetic-functional condition. The contest will be broadcast live in HD and the viewer can even follow their favorite athletes backstage.

Is it the future of female bodybuilding? Christine Boudreau just backed out stating, "I'm sad to report I am unable to follow through with the Lady OM MMXI show this December 1st for several reasons (financial included). All shows are expensive, but this one would have been terribly stressful on me financially & even with fund-raising I wouldn't be sure I would have enough money to do the event." Financial concern is big for female bodybuilders with such little contest money and endorsements. I couldn't find any mention of prize money offered for this contest.

I applaud the concept and initiative to make a change, and am looking forward to see the potential of this competition model. It appears to have a few bugs, but we need to start somewhere and move forward.

Kike Elomaa - The Lost Ms. Olympia

The past winners of the Ms. Olympia are legendary bodybuilders going all the way back to Rachel McLish. How come I've never heard of Kike Elomaa? I was intrigued to find out more about one of the pioneering champions in women's bodybuilding.

Wikipedia: Ritva Tuulikki "Kike" Elomaa (born July 25, 1955 in Lokalahti) is a retired professional female bodybuilding champion and pop singer from Finland.

Kike Elomaa won the second Ms. Olympia contest in 1981. She was the only non-American to win the Ms. Olympia title until 2000. She competed at 5'5" and 117 pounds. After retiring from bodybuilding, Kike had a successful career as a pop singer in her native Finland. Kike was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2001. She has also been awarded the IFBB’s President’s Gold Medal for her work in supporting the sport of bodybuilding. A fitness contest, the Kike Elomaa Fitness Championship, is held annually in Finland.

On April 17, 2011, Elomaa was elected to the Finnish parliament for 2011–2015, representing the True Finns.

Hulking Out & Shirt Ripping

Ever since the Incredible Hulk appeared in the pages of Marvel comics, people have dreamt of growing instant, explosive muscles, tearing their shirts off and going “Green”. Hulk Hogan added to this and tore his shirt off before each wrestling match. Even Clark Kent rips open his shirt to reveal Superman beneath. This process is copied by most 5 year old boys.

Enter the female bodybuilder to take it to the next level. Put on a shirt too small, add a web cam and flex until the shirt is ripped to threads. The effect is very primal and quite explosive, like a gamma bomb.

Annie Rivieccio was one of the first to “Hulk Out” but many have followed. The Shirt Rippers Blog listed their “Hulking Out Power Rankings” for women in this genre. The top spot goes to Mz. Devious aka Danni. She explains the process “I stuff my pecs into a tight blouse, button myself in and watch as my chest expands close up… ripping off each button (hands free hulk out) the buttons go pop pop pop and hit the walls, the camera and take flight! then shredding the shirt , like a paper shredder….”. Her latest hulk out video became the #1 top selling clip in just a few days. Other Hulksters on the rankings list include Laurie Steel, Florina Visan, Oana Hreapca and of course Annie.
